The Peace Beneath All Things

Fundamental Peace: The Source Book launches today, live and worldwide, on the International Day of Peace. This is the story of the book — and your invitation to the Dialogue.

Thirty-one years ago, in a classroom at Lancaster, Johan Galtung taught me the two words that organized everything peace studies knew. Negative peace: the absence of violence. Positive peace: the presence of justice. I have spent the three decades since watching both being built, and both coming apart — as an international observer in the former Yugoslavia, in hundreds of classrooms across Spain and Israel, inside a global firm present in 175 countries, and alongside the World Happiness Foundation's community around the world.

Somewhere in those years a question took shape and would not leave: why do ceasefires collapse and just institutions corrode, even when everyone at the table wants them to hold?

Twenty years of work condense into one sentence: negative peace ends violence, positive peace builds justice, and neither holds without a third thing. A peace beneath the treaties and beneath the institutions — in the nervous systems of the people who must live them. I call it Fundamental Peace: the peace beneath all things. The name came to me in deep meditation at Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, in Bhutan, inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh.

This is not a metaphor. Fundamental Peace is a measurable state, resting on four capacities: attention that moves freely, without effortful suppression; emotional coherence across our different states; a self held less rigidly; and an awareness of oneself that stays compassionate. With Dr. Saamdu Chetri I published its scientific foundation this year in Behavioral Sciences, and the complete FP20 scale — the instrument that measures it — is printed in the book, free for anyone to use. It comes with one non-negotiable condition: it may never be used as a gate. An instrument of peace cannot be a door that closes.

Fundamental Peace is not the absence of pain… it is the transmutation of its energy into love and compassion.

The book carries the science, the story and the practice: an Overture, twenty-seven chapters and a Coda; twenty-two original figures; the Ground Route, a path of eight movements honoring Patanjali's eight limbs and the Eightfold Path; and a five-word daily practice — Settle. Focus. Intend. Witness. Choose. It is explicit about what is demonstrated and what remains unproven; a book about peace should not overclaim. It closes with an enrollment — Generation Txai · Generation Compassion, txai being the Huni Kuin greeting that means "my other self" — and it is dedicated to the memory of Johan Galtung and to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Beneath all of it, one memory. Prijedor, 1997. An eighty-five-year-old woman waiting outside a school at four in the morning to vote, who said peace and happiness in the same breath. This book was written to keep her sentence company.

Your invitation — today

Today at 11 am EST, we launch the book live, worldwide: Dialogues for Fundamental Peace. It will not be a book talk. It will be a Dialogue, run by the rules the book itself proposes: nobody represents anyone; nothing has to be agreed; the question is experiential; and differences get named rather than smoothed. We begin in silence — because two braced nervous systems will reproduce the conflict they came to resolve.

It is free and open to everyone, from anywhere. Register here: https://happinessagora.zoom.us/meeting/register/QZtbnGD-Qd2TzBP7gONtmw

The book is available today in English: https://lmgallardo.org/book/fundamental-peace and Castilian Spanish https://lmgallardo.org/es/book/fundamental-peace — paperback, hardcover and Kindle, published by World Happiness Press. We are not selling a book today. We are giving an instrument, and asking you to sit down with the world for an hour.

Peace is not somewhere ahead of us. It is beneath us, waiting to be reached. Today, we go there together.

Hoy vamos juntos.
