Enough Is Enough. Becoming Peace in a World That Has Forgotten How to Listen

An Opening Reflection for the 8th Gross Global Happiness Summit
We Gather Here Not by Accident, but by Calling
Dear friends, colleagues, catalysts of well-being, and fellow travellers of consciousness:
Welcome to the 8th Gross Global Happiness Summit. Welcome to this sacred ground at the University for Peace in Costa Rica—a place established by the United Nations General Assembly not merely as a campus, but as a living declaration that peace is not only possible, it is the deepest design of the human spirit.
Eight years. Think about that for a moment. Eight years of gathering on this soil, from every continent on Earth, to ask the question that most institutions are afraid to ask: What would it take for every human being to be free, conscious, and happy?
That question is the heartbeat of everything we do at the World Happiness Foundation. It is the essence of Happytalism—a new paradigm in which success is no longer measured by the accumulation of wealth, power, or fame, but by freedom from fear, freedom to be, the expansion of consciousness, and the sharing of happiness.
And I must tell you, with all the light in my heart and all the honesty in my soul: that question has never been more urgent than it is today.
The World We See: A Diagnosis Without Despair
Let us look at the world clearly, without flinching and without falling into hopelessness.
We live in a time when criminal and violent minorities—small in number but disproportionate in their grip on the levers of power—continue to manipulate, divide, and terrorize the vast, peaceful majority. Authoritarian impulses masquerade as strength. Fear is manufactured as policy. Disinformation is weaponized to corrode trust. The sacred bonds of dialogue, forgiveness, and mutual recognition are being torn apart by those who profit from keeping humanity fragmented.
In too many places, diplomacy has failed—not because peace is impossible, but because those at the table never intended to pursue it. Victimism has become a currency. Grievance has been elevated above grace. And the architecture of global governance, built after the last great catastrophe of World War II, creaks under the weight of leaders who lack the inner peace required to build outer peace.
Enough is enough.
I say this not from anger, but from love. Not from frustration, but from a place of deep equanimity—the same equanimity we cultivate in our work, in our meditations, in our coaching, in our Agoras around the world. The ability to see what is, and to respond from the highest frequency of our being.
Freedom from Fear: The First Pillar of Our Revolution
At the heart of Happytalism lies a radical reframing of what it means to succeed as a human being. Where capitalism frames success around money, power, and fame, Happytalism frames it around three pillars: freedom from fear, the expansion of consciousness, and happiness shared with all.
Freedom from fear is not merely a political aspiration—it is, before all else, an inner practice. It is the freedom from the ego’s constant contraction, from the mind’s compulsive projection of catastrophe, from inherited narratives of scarcity and separation. As the great Zen master ThĂch Nhất Hạnh taught us, freedom is the very condition of happiness. Without it, peace remains fragile and external—a ceasefire at best, never a homecoming.
This is why we say that Fundamental Peace—the kind that does not collapse at the first provocation—is not the absence of conflict. It is the presence of liberty, awareness, and joy. A society can only be fundamentally peaceful when its people enjoy the freedom of mind and spirit to live consciously and joyfully. Everything else is negotiation under threat.
Today, the tyranny of violent minorities persists not because they are strong, but because too many of us remain afraid. Afraid of speaking. Afraid of standing. Afraid of choosing love as strategy in a world that rewards aggression. This Summit—this community—exists to break that cycle. We are here to cultivate a fearless humanity. Not reckless. Not naive. Fearless. Rooted in the deep calm that comes from knowing who we truly are beyond the stories of victimhood, beyond the illusions of separateness.
Rising Consciousness: From Awareness to Transcendence
The second pillar of our work is the expansion of consciousness—and this is where the real transformation happens.
In Happytalism, consciousness unfolds in three levels. The first is awareness: the simple, powerful act of waking up to what is happening around us and within us. The second is mindfulness: the deeper inquiry into why things are happening—why we react, why systems perpetuate suffering, why fear takes root. The third is transcendence: the luminous question of what for—the discovery of purpose beyond the personal, the alignment with something greater than the self.
This rising consciousness is not abstract philosophy. It is the most practical toolkit humanity has ever been offered. When a leader operates from awareness, they stop reacting and start responding. When a community practises mindfulness, it ceases to be manipulated by manufactured outrage. When a civilization touches transcendence, it stops fighting over finite resources and begins co-creating from a place of abundance—recognizing, as we articulate in our Foundation’s vision, that the material and immaterial resources of this world need not be limited and there is no need to fight over them.
Our 2026–2028 Strategic Plan names this aspiration supra-consciousness: a collective awakening to our interdependence, a planetary mindfulness in which humanity remembers that we are not separate from each other, from nature, or from the sacred fabric of life itself. This is the antidote to the tyranny of violent minorities. Not matching their force, but transcending their frequency entirely.
Sharing Happiness: The Activator of a New World
And here we arrive at the third pillar—the one that sets everything in motion: happiness. But not happiness as consumption or escape. Happiness as shared practice. Happiness as the activator of the entire system.
In our framework, happiness is never for oneself alone. It is happiness to share—happiness that flows outward into families, organisations, cities, schools, and institutions. This is why the World Happiness Foundation has built a polycentric, decentralized architecture of transformation: our Agoras in more than 80 cities across every continent, our Cities of Happiness and Schools of Happiness initiatives, our Chief Well-Being Officer programme, our Conscious Catalysts of Happiness and Well-Being—all of them expressions of the same truth: that when happiness is cultivated and shared deliberately, it becomes the most powerful force for social cohesion the world has ever seen.
Our vision of 10 Billion Happy by 2050 is not a slogan. It is a measurable, trackable, sacred commitment to every living being on this planet. It is grounded in three strategic pillars—Fundamental Peace, Supra-Consciousness, and Happiness for All—and it invites governments, businesses, researchers, educators, and communities to join us in building an inclusive world where well-being is a universal right.
A Call for Real Diplomacy: Becoming the Buffer the World Needs
Let me speak now about what I believe is one of the most important contributions we can make as a global happiness movement: the creation of a real diplomacy.
Today, much of what passes for diplomacy is theatre—posturing and positioning by actors who have no intention of listening, forgiving, or releasing their attachment to victimism. Through our Public Policy Forum, we convene leaders across health, education, environment, economics, and diplomacy to break the silos and reorient policy toward happiness and well-being for all. We strive to be a voice for happiness in the rooms where global decisions are made. But now we must go further.
We need a diplomacy of consciousness—one that acts as a genuine buffer among those who cannot yet dialogue, who cannot yet forgive, who cannot yet liberate themselves from the cycles of blame and retaliation. This is the diplomacy of the Conscious Catalyst: the person who has done the inner work, who has integrated their own shadow, who can hold space between opposing forces without collapsing into one side or the other.
This is not weakness. This is the highest form of leadership—leadership from the inside out. The Rouser, as we define them in our work, is a conscious catalyst of well-being, someone who transforms not through coercion but through presence, not through manipulation but through love, not through power over others but through power with others.
This is the diplomacy of Happytalism. And it begins right here, among us.
Becoming Peace: The Only Revolution That Lasts
So here is our call—from this sacred ground at the University for Peace, in the heart of Costa Rica, surrounded by the green cathedrals of nature and the collective wisdom of eight years of summits:
Become peace. Do not merely advocate for it. Embody it. Let it live in your breath, in your silence, in the way you meet another’s eyes.
Become calm. Not the calm of withdrawal, but the calm of a mountain—rooted, present, unshakeable by the storms of those who profit from chaos.
Walk the talk of harmony. Let your life be the proof that another way is possible. Let every conversation be a peace treaty. Let every act of kindness be a revolution.
Act from fundamental peace, love, and equanimity. These are not passive virtues. They are the most potent forces in the universe. They are the ground from which all lasting change grows.
To Those Who Would Manipulate: We See You. And We Choose Differently.
To the criminal minorities who weaponize fear, who exploit division, who hide behind institutions while crushing the spirit of the many: we do not meet you with your own violence. That is your game, and we refuse to play it.
Instead, we meet you with something you cannot defeat: the rising consciousness of billions of people who are waking up. The happiness of communities that no longer need what you are selling. The freedom of hearts that have broken the chains of fear—not by fighting you, but by outgrowing you.
Our global Agoras—in Kolkata, Granada, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Miami, Jaipur, and dozens of other cities—are not protest movements. They are creation movements. They are places where people gather not to fight the darkness, but to be the light. Every coach we train, every Chief Well-Being Officer we certify, every school and city we help become a School of Happiness and City of Happiness is another node in a global network that is, quietly and powerfully, making the old paradigm of domination obsolete.
The Invitation: Join Us on the Path
As we open this 8th Summit, I want to leave you not with a conclusion but with an invitation.
Over the next three days, you will learn cutting-edge techniques from global leaders in the field. You will practise emotional intelligence and compassion. You will develop habits to sustain well-being for the long term. You will connect—over coffee, over meals, in the green hills of this extraordinary campus—with people who share your deepest conviction: that a free, conscious, and happy humanity is not a dream. It is a design.
But more than all of this, I invite you to be what you came here to learn. Do not wait until you return home to practise peace. Practise it now. In the way you listen to the person beside you. In the way you hold silence between sessions. In the way you allow your own shadow to surface, to be seen, to be integrated—because, as we teach in our Alchemy of Leadership, the transformation of lead into gold begins within.
Change the heart, and the structures become possible.
A Final Word: The Light Is Not Coming. It Is Here.
I began my journey in this work at the age of 25, in war-torn regions, where I saw what happens when fear wins and dialogue dies. Everything I have built since—the World Happiness Foundation, the World Happiness Fest, the Academy, the Agoras, the Conscious Catalysts programme, this Summit—has been an answer to that darkness. Not a denial of it. An answer to it.
And after all these years, I can tell you with more certainty than ever: the light is not coming. It is here. It is in this room. It is in the eyes of every person who chose to travel to Costa Rica to sit at the table of Gross Global Happiness. It is in the 80+ Agoras pulsing with life across the globe. It is in the vision of 10 Billion Happy by 2050—a vision that is no longer an aspiration but a strategic plan, a measured pathway, a living, breathing movement.
We stand at a unique intersection in history. The world aches for a new direction. Happytalism offers that new paradigm.
So let us begin. Let us be bold. Let us be kind. Let us be the peace we came here to create.
With all my light,
